Locate East Sussex is delighted to announce our support of  Fun House Festival launching in Hastings on Friday 24 August at St Mary in the Castle. An immersive, fun, creative festival for families and the first of its kind in Hastings, it places children at the heart of its programming.

‘It is all about having fun while gaining valuable knowledge and skills in design and making.’ Claire Tomlinson, Little Mashers, Festival Founders

The festival organisers’ husband and wife team Clare and Andrew owners of Little Mashers came together with St Mary in the Castle as Fun House, to forge links between the thriving creative industries in the town and the younger generations, of all backgrounds, who stand to benefit from acquiring new skills whilst using their creativity and enjoying plenty of good old-fashioned summer holiday fun!

This unique educational experience really brings the community together, showing that learning continues beyond the classroom, and creative minds can inspire and be inspired at any age.

Kids from 0-13yrs will enjoy a range of activities and crafts guided by leading experts, from sensory play to animation, superstructure sculpture, art and design and screen printing, where kids will learn the basic techniques of screen and relief printing including, stencilling, and stamping—to create posters, images, and t-shirts that they have designed themselves.

Festival highlights include:

Paper Lab, artist and designer, Marie-Louise Miller leads creative play and imaginative problem solving for curious minds of all ages. Creating a large-scale immersive 3D drawing, drawing machines and superstructures using super strong but lightweight paper stixx made from recycled newspaper.

Stop motion animation workshops from Press Play Films using mini clay animations and Janey Moffatt of The Craftimation Factory, an award-winning arts charity based in St Leonards-on-Sea. Jerwood Gallery will be bringing its extremely popular Baby Sense sessions.  Zeroh Design will be creating a digital centrepiece for the festival. Hastings is a hotspot for the creative, media and digital industries. Fun House is a chance to showcase the strength of the local creative industries plus contribute to the ongoing positive regeneration of the town.

Beth King from Locate East Sussex, the publicly funded team tasked with helping grow the local economy.  Regarding Fun House she commented:

‘There’s something really exciting brewing here. It’s such a warm creative community and it’s heartening to see that there are festivals dedicated to educating and inspiring local children about design. The challenging state of design education across the UK is well documented. The festival will help increase exposure to the creative industries and awareness of opportunities within the town. And, it’s a great way to show our support for the creative businesses taking part.’
